During last Tuesday’s meeting we had a guest speaker, Lauri Rogers, who spoke to us about suicide and depression. Lauri Rogers, Psy.D. a Senior Psychologist/Coordinator of Clinical Services at Baylor explained that major depression and suicide often go hand in hand. However, you often see other mental health issues such as Bipolar disorder, Schizophrenia, alcoholism, substance abuse, or head injuries associated with suicide and depression. She also explained the different stressors that college students have on them which often helps reality sink in through the pressure of living away from home, making new friends, all while getting their degree.
Dr. Rogers explained to us that the counseling center is often the last to see students. Many people don’t reach out for help in fear of stigmas or because they are frozen in anxiety or depression. She pointed out that students are the front line when it comes to helping people with a mental health issue. Dr. Rogers emphasized that we can be the “Hand of Hope, when hope can’t be found”.
We will have a bake sale on October 7th from 8:30 until 2:00pm in the BSB! Hope to see you there!
Our next meeting will be held on October 13 at 5:30pm in BSB C124.
