Addiction speaker: Dr. Dolan

OCTOBER FOCUS: ADDICTION

Here’s the majority of what we heard today from our wonderful speaker Dr. Dolan.

Sadly, I was unable to record the last 15 minutes or so of the discussion, but here’s a little summary:
-People can become addicted to marijuana.
-Research shows that using money as a reward for staying clean is effective; however, after the 16-week period (or whatever length of time the support group meets), the individuals will relapse after the financial reward ends.
-Forms of treatment for addiction, which includes methadone:

Methadone is used to relieve moderate to severe pain that has not been relieved by non-narcotic pain relievers. It also is used to prevent withdrawal symptoms in patients who were addicted to opiate drugs and are enrolled in treatment programs in order to stop taking or continue not taking the drugs.

-Withdrawal symptoms for opiates/marijuana/cocaine, etc. are not fatal. The withdrawal process feels terrible, but the individual will be okay.
-Alcohol withdrawal on the other hand IS FATAL. Medical assistance should be sought.

*sidenote* next time, I will record with a real camera and not my phone. I apologize for the quality.

We hope to see you at the next meeting on October 17th!
