At last night’s Active Minds meeting, we discussed the semantics of bullying and how it changes from high school to college, why a bystander may or may not be motivated to help, and ways to combat the bullying. We also watched some videos that demonstrated how bullying is represented in the media, for either dramatic or even sometimes comedic effect. We also went over the information regarding becoming a Mental Health Peer Leader. Information and the application can be found at the link below. Let me know if you have any questions!
As you may know, Valentine’s Day comes to us in two weeks on February 14th. The Counseling Center is putting on their Hope Peace Love event, at which Active Minds will have a table from 9 am to 3 pm. I will soon send out more information and a sign-up sheet to help! One last but very important thing: our scheduled time for our general meetings may be changing! Please vote at the link below if you would rather have Tuesday meetings from 5 to 6 pm, or Wednesday meetings from 6 to 7 pm. I will also send this link out separately.
Active Minds just had our first general meeting where we discussed the awareness topic of the month, suicide. We had a discussion about red flags to watch out for when talking to people who might be in danger of suicide as well as how suicide and depression are represented in the media such as in music and television shows.
Membership Dues are due at our meeting on October 3rd! Please remember to bring $15 (for just dues and the new shirt) or $20 (for dues, new shirt, and old shirt). Our new shirts are in the process of being designed so they will not be available immediately.
We do need your help designing our new t-shirts also! Please submit any design ideas you may have to us by September 26th for consideration.
sign up for volunteering with Active Minds at the Waco Family Abuse Center go to http://www.familyabusecenter.org/volunteer/ to fill out their volunteer form and email me once you have submitted it. On the portion of the form that asks you if volunteering is required check “NO” but write “ActiveMinds” in the text box under the question “What is the name of the organization requiring volunteer hours?” so that the center knows whom all is volunteering with our group.
Active Minds will also be volunteering in this years “Out of the Darkness” walk in Waco which will take place on Saturday, September 30th from 6-9pm (however, since we are volunteering they may request that we arrive before 6pm). If you would like to volunteer with us for this event sign up at https://afsp.donordrive.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.event&eventID=4737 underneath the “counseling center team”.
Active Minds has many exciting events planned for this semester and we are very excited for all of you to join us. At the interest meeting yesterday the new members played on teams in an Active Minds trivia game! The teams drew castles with seven defenses and had the opportunity to “attack” opposing teams defenses if they were able to answer trivia questions correctly. All of the teams had awesome castles with defenses ranging from moats, lions, and soldiers to an image of Shrek the ogre riding a dragon! Our winners of the game were “Team North America” maintaining all of their defenses and taking home the win in a sudden death round!
Don’t forget that our next meeting will take place on September 19th at 5:30pm! This meeting will take place in E227 and we will be focusing on Suicide Awareness for the month of September.
We are currently looking for a member for the Treasurer position. There are two other positions available under two of our current Officers acting as “apprentices” in order to learn the ropes of the positions and take over when the officers graduate in December. The two apprentice positions are available for either the Secretary Position and the Fundraising/Community Outreach Position. These applications are due by September 19th by Midnight to our President Kathleen_DiBacco@baylor.edu.
If you are hoping to volunteer as a part of Active Minds for the Waco Family Abuse Center please fill out this form ( http://www.familyabusecenter.org/volunteer/ ) by September 19th and email me once you have submitted it. On the portion of the form that asks you if volunteering is required check “NO” but write “Active Minds” in the text box under the question “What is the name of the organization requiring volunteer hours?” so that the center knows who all is volunteering with our group.
One final thing, we will be having our suicide awareness event on September 18th and 19th so please keep an eye out for another email about helping us with set-up and take down! Since this event does not require tabling or participation during the event the 3 points for the event will be awarded to those who help with either set-up or take-down!
Post Secret has officially begun! Within the next few weeks Active Minds members will be collecting anonymous secrets across campus and displaying them. Students may also submit secrets anonymously through our website by commenting on this post!
This activity is meant to create a sense of community throughout the Baylor campus and bring awareness to certain issues. Students will be able to see their own secret displayed as well as read other secrets from people around campus, all anonymous.
If you have a secret you would like to share, leave it in the comments on this post!
The submission deadline is March 28.

Next Thursday, February 11th in the spirit of Valentines Day, we will be having a “Remember to Love Yourself” day. We will have a booth out by the fountain from 11-3 with positive messages to give out as well as some sweet treats to sell. If you would like to volunteer for this event please email me.
As a reminder we are implementing a points system for members this semester. At the end of the semester we will be having a fun event (free bowling+free food=fun) that will be available to members who have earned at least 4 points. You receive one point for each meeting you attend and two points for each event that you volunteer for. There will also be a prize for the member who has the most points at the end of the semester!
At our meeting on October 13 we learned about and discussed the effects of Anxiety and OCD. We also played a simulation of the lifestyle of a person with OCD. Members had to wash their hands multiple times or pop bubbles before they could continue paying attention to the information being presented.
We had a great time chalking the campus yesterday spreading the word about today’s upcoming meeting! Come to the BSB C124 today at 5:30 to hear from our guest speaker, Lauri Rogers!
